what we care
Community Development
We believe in giving back to the community and society we operate. Social Responsibility is an embedded value at UMPL. Our CSR and Social Safeguard policies are governed by a clear focus on contributing in the life and livelihoods of the community. We work towards sustainable community development by helping educational institutions and health facilities as well as contributing to the environment, skills enhancement, women empowerment, livelihood of the underprivileged and local infrastructure development.
Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been conducted to identify the impact of the project and basis which an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) has been developed to ensure minimum impact to the environment and society by periodically monitoring sensitive parameters. A Livelihood Restoration Plan (LRP) has been developed and an independent agency shall be retained to implement the plan.
The CSR Plan of UMPL aims to empower and help communities to improve their social and physical environments, overcome social exclusion, build social capital and capacities and involve communities in the strategic assessment and decision-making processes that contributes in improving their overall local conditions. The benefits described in this Plan should also be understood as distinct from the range of mitigation actions that are described in the two core project safeguard documents, the ESIA and LRP, which specify actions required by various parties to mitigate temporary and permanent social and environment impacts. Therefore, the benefits described in this Plan are way beyond the requirements of impact mitigation and compensation.
Overall objectives of UMPL CSR Plan are to ensure the implementation of CSR initiatives in letter and spirit through appropriate procedures and reporting that enables to create more vibrant and balanced community.
Dedicated focus group discussions with women surrounding project area were held during the preparation of the ESIA and LRP. The former includes a Gender Action Plan detailing activities requested by female PAPs. Special provisions for acceptance and handling of complaints related to Gender-based violence, sexual harassment, exploitation, and abuse will be included in the proposed project-level Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).
We have developed a Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) to enable meaningful and inclusive participations of all stakeholders by analyzing their interest and information need. We believe to keep stakeholders informed and to keep them involved, satisfied and supportive.
